There are two views of how the Mustang pony car got its name. The first view is that John Najjar who was the executive stylist for Ford loved the World War ll P-51 Mustang fighter jet and so suggested the Mustang name.

The other view is that his wife as a birthday present gave Robert Eggert the Ford Division market research manager, who loved horses, a book on Mustangs. This inspired him to name the car after the Mustang. But whatever view is true the Ford Mustang enthusiasts are happy with the pony car.
