Are you a Barbie doll fan or do you collect them? If so this is one of the best places to come. Barbie started out in 1959 and is produced by Mattel. This doll is one of the best selling in doll history. The only competition that comes close is the Bratz dolls.
My experience with Barbie started around age 9 or 10 years old. I loved to play house and adventure with Barbie, Ken and some other dolls like Daniel Boone and His friends and horses. Even now when I am shopping and happen to go past the doll sections I will slow down and check out the newest Barbie's.
Barbie came about thanks to Ruth Handler an American businesswoman who noticed that her young daughter liked to imagine that some of her paper dolls were adults. Most dolls at that time were baby dolls so Ruth suggested to her husband, who was the co-founder of the Mattel Toy Company, that they ought to develop an adult doll for children. Her husband and all the Mattel directors were not very enthusiastic about the idea. However during a trip to Europe Ruth Handler came across a German adult doll called Bild Lili. She bought 3 of these dolls and gave one to her daughter and the other two to Mattel.
The doll idea was redesigned and given a new name of Barbie. This first Barbie doll wore a zebra patterned swimsuit and had a blond or brunette ponytail. The dolls were popular from the beginner and around 350,000 were sold that first year.
