Beautiful Neuschwanstein Fantasy Castle. See actual moving Lake and Snowstorm around the Medieval Castle and Knight in Chainmail. Information, books, DVD's and more on Neuschwanstein Castle and others. Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle Poster Castles were used in medieval times for defense and display. Because there was a lot of war people needed a strong fortress to flee into. The rich maintained the castles and usually had armies to defend themselves and the peasants that lived in the villages surrounding the castle. However once gunpowder and the cannon was invented it made the castle useless as a defense.

Now castles are popular tourist attractions and can bring in the crowds. Neuschwanstein Castle (pictured above) is one of the most attractive and popular castles left from the Dark Ages and is located on a mountaintop in Germany. It was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria as his private retreat and in honor to Richard Wagner who was a famous composer of music, poems and operas.

The Neuschwanstein Castle is also one of the most photographed castle in the world but for some reason the interior is not allowed to be photographed.
It has been given the nickname "Cinderella Castle," which isn't surprising. It could be that the Cinderella castle in the story and movie was based on this castle.
