The Classic Citroens, 1935-1975

Citroen is a French automaker that got its start in 1919. At first this car manufacturer make cars with regular designs until 1934 when it surprised the world with its innovative Traction Avant. The was the world's first mass-produced front wheel drive car and was made until 1956.

Citroen became know for making unique cars in a creative way. Some of their well known models include the H Van HY, the 2CV The Duck, the DS Goddess and the CX. Citroen was still going strong in 2009 and celebrated its 90th anniversary then.

Citroen made the first steel car for Europe in 1834 and also swiveling headlights for several models, which gave the car better visibility especially on winding roads.

These cars were well build and became the first car to be driven around Australia. The model used was a 1923 Citroen 5CV and was driven by Neville Westwood. This car is now in the National Museum of Australia.

Citroen ( the founder André-Gustave Citroën) disapproved of the German occupation of France during WWII and did his best to make things difficult for the Germans by producing ordered trucks for them with extreme slowness. In addition to the slow production he sabotaged these vehicles by placing the notch on the oil stick in the wrong place causing the engines seize up from lack of oil. The Gestapo soon figured it out and put him on their black list.
