Used Parachutes Skydiver with parachute - Peel and Stick Wall Decal by Wallmonkeys

A parachute is used to slow an object so that it can land safety. Or in some cases used to slow a car or space shuttle so that it can come to a stop more quickly and keep it from over shooting the runway. The parachute uses drag from the air to slow down the object attached to it.

Parachutes used to be make out of silk but now the most common material is nylon.
The earliest know use of a parachute is from a drawing found from the 1470's showing a man hanging from a parachute type of device.

It wasn't until 1783 that a record was made of someone making a public jump using a parachute. In 1785 the parachute was made and used for safety escaping a hot air balloon in case of emergency.

There are several types of parachutes. Ascending types are ones used by Paragliders to stay in the air as long as possible. Descending ones just get you to the ground safety. Round parachutes are descending and are used mainly for dropping large cargo from aircraft.

Most modern parachutists use a self inflating ram air type of parachute. This parachute or parafoil gives control to the skydiver so that he can decide how fast to drop and can change directions. The photo at the top shows this type.

The top concern for someone using a parachute is will it open property. The parachute has to be packed property to insure that it opens correctly. Many skydivers have a reserve parachute that is used for emergencies. People, called riggers, who have been especially trained and are certified, pack these reserve parachutes.
